Superstar singer Mariah Carey is being sued for copyright infringement over her 1994 classic Christmas song, “All I Want for Christmas is You.”
According to songwriter Andy Stone, he co-wrote a song with Vince Vance & the Valiants with the same title five years earlier. Although the two songs are different musically, Stone claims that Carey and co-writer Walter Afansieff caused confusion and did not ask for permission.
Stone filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Stone is seeking at least $20 million in damages from Carey, her co-writer and Sony Music Entertainment for copyright infringement and misappropriation, among other claims.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” was recorded by Carey for her fourth studio album and first holiday album, Merry Christmas (1994). The song became a global success, topping the charts in twenty-six countries including Australia, Canada, France and Germany. In 2019, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, 25 years after its original release, thereby breaking several records, including the longest trip to number one.
With an estimated sales of over 16 million copies worldwide, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the best-selling holiday song by a female artist and one of the best-selling physical singles in music history.
